Today's post is a little odd, as it has some pretty specific limits and unusual capabilities, for a fantasy campaign.
This amulet allows a anyone using it to understand another dialect of the same parent tongue. The maker of the amulet must know the parent tongue when the amulet is made. At first glance, this would seem to be almost useless in a standard campaign, as not many languages share a common root in typical fantasy campaigns.
Tips:
But, and this is a big one, you should consider some of these things when you think about your campaign. The richness that this kind of detail could offer is immense! You don't have to work super hard (like Mr. Tolkien) at making language names and lineages or anything like that. You can simply link some countries or groups of people to a shared root language, or even have several races with common ties. This will make an item like this very flavorful when dropped into a campaign, but not give the players easy access to instant, trouble-free communication. Also, just because you understand some or even most of a language, don't think there are not opportunties for some really role playing inducing miscommunications! Take items like this, and consider how they can mold and shape your world-building, and also how they can improve chances to role play in your role playing game!
