Greyhawk Campaign - The Sheldomar Valley - Session Two Recap

Session Two: February 19, 2022

The night watch hears some creature far off from the camp, but no one has ever heard this creature's calls before. It is loud, but singular and low, almost like a growl. That morning, Yew forages a bit as the party awakens and prepares for the day's travels. They scarcely had a chance to finish packing for the day when the same group of soldiers came up the road. They then said that they had questions regarding the bandit gang that the party dispatched the day before. They did find the group, but no body of Korder. They saw signs of a beast there, but no body. They asked for the warrant back, as they needed proof of his demise. They offered a wanted poster in exchange. The party agreed. They then proceeded on their journey. They made great progress on the road, almost making it to a river nearby, but getting only close as the sun sets. They decided to push forward to make the bridge or ford of the river. They were then ambushed by a band of goblins. Using poison, they hit the mule, killing her. The fight was fierce, but the party came out on top, after the Ranger stepped in after tracking the party for some time. After they picked up their gear, spilled out of the cart, and rested, they took stock of what spoils from the fight they could find. They also piled the bodies on a pyre to burn. After resting this evening, the rogue of the party had a vision, which the Ranger saw the signs of on her face. They then encounter a large group of soldiers, who demand to discuss payment from the party for a toll upon the road. The cleric of the party realizes they are no soldiers, due to some inconsistencies with their gear. During the interrogation, the druid tries to cast a spell, causing the poorly-disguised bandits to press forward to attack. The party then tries to intimidate the group into backing down. They negotiate, and the bandits agree to part ways if the party gives them food. Once they leave, the party resumes their journey. They encounter more traffic on the road, with whole families and smaller groups of peasants fleeing towards Keoland. Stopped and asked for the reason, the peasants cite recent attacks on villages, and the lack of safety in the Grand Duchy of Geoff. They finally reach a good place to camp for the night, and the Druid goes nearby looking for flowering plants. The druid senses something is not right, and is attacked by a shambling human figure in the dark woods surrounding the campsite. He calls out that they are under attack, as the party hears more shambling in the woods.
